A central figure is Christian Hoffmann, a figure with some resemblance to the author, still in high school when the book begins, but eager to study medicine.

Oct 22, Heinrich rated it liked it. His father, Richard, is made of sterner stuff. The “Ulysses”-type of chapters were often beyond my comprehension of German, but I seriously consider giving them a new try.
You better read it in German if you don’t want to miss out on the richness of the language including hilarious passages written in local Saxonian dialectthough it’s a tough, long read, best suited for a long and quiet summer break.
